SiNUS 2010

Models United Nations are initiatives that seek to promote UN values among young students through discussions and negotiations within the organization scope and procedures. In Brazil, there is a widespread tradition in modeling, especially among university students. Nevertheless, this is not an exclusive prerogative of them. High school pupils also have their own models, developing independent debates, interpreting reality and proposing their solutions for some of the world’s most disquieting problems.

High Schools’ Models United Nations (HSMUNs), through multilateral diplomatic forums, look for developing an educational project, additional to traditional school teaching. Promoting knowledge acquisition, widening abilities and incorporating values, as well as developing intellectual and interpersonal capabilities are the main objectives.

SiNUS (from the original acronym in Portuguese: Model United Nations for High School Students) is one of the most traditional Brazilian MUN developed for teenagers interested in issues such as history, geography, conflicts, economy, global governance, communications, human rights and so forth. Since 2002, students from Universidade de Brasília (UnB) promote SiNUS’ annual editions. Pupils from all over the country attend the conference, attracted by the professional atmosphere, the debates content and the unique experience that this project brings.

Today, important conferences such as Fórum FAAP, ONU Jr. and Mini ONU take place in several cities in the country. Considerable part of them has exclusively university students in the staff board. Some schools even have their own models, in which teachers and college students work together to promote the events.

High school is a decisive decision moment for teenagers. It is when they start defining their interest areas and thinking in a professional way. HSUNM have been playing an important role in this decision making process for several students. It is a reality. Across the country, International Relations, Law, Political Science, Economics and Sociology are only some of the university majors that have many former representatives of HSMUNs.

In 2010, it was brought to SiNUS floor UN’s claim for a Peace and Freedom Culture amongst nations and individuals. According to a UNESCO letter “once war starts in human minds, it is in human minds that peace defense must be built.” Who will ever deny that making pupils closer to reality, in a critical and diplomatic path, is the best way of assuring grand decision makers and leaders in the future?

V SiEM

SiEM was the first MUN to simulate exclusively historical committees, nowadays a remarkable distinction of this traditional paulistano HSMUN. Its first edition was held in 2006 and it is going towards its fifth edition in 2010 with seven renewed and exciting historical and juridical committees.

The slogan Fazendo História (Making History) refers to the cornerstone principle of SiEM: the enactment of historical situations enables the participants to rewrite facts of the past, whilst the experience of living crucial moments of history yields to new understandings and interpretations of events.
