Models United Nations, or MUNs, really started as Models of the League of Nations Assembly. The Harvard University was the precursor of these models, organizing the first one in 1927. In 1945, the Model League of Nations made its transition to Model United Nations. The first Model UN (so known as the WorldMUN) was also implemented by Harvard University, in 1953, few years after the end of World War II. As a consequence, many of its final resolutions were related to this tragic event. In Brazil, MUNs first made their appearance at the University of Brasília, where students (members of the Programa de Educação Tutorial - Relações Internacionais) and faculty members from the University’s International Relations Department (now International Relations Institute – IREL) decided to participate in the WorldMUN, held in Budapest in the spring of 1997. They enjoyed the experience so much that, when back home, they founded the Centro de Simulações de Organizações Internacionais (CSOI Simulation Club), the oldest MUN institution in Brazil. The CSOI's simulations were restricted to the University of Brasilia, but soon enough larger ambitions came onto the horizon. In 1998, stemming from the CSOI, the first Americas Model United Nations (AMUN) was held, with the collaboration of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Since then, AMUN has come a long way, but it has always distinguished itself for its academic quality, its innovative committees, and its atmosphere of camaraderie. AMUN has also given rise to many other high-quality models in Brazil, spreading the MUN experience far and wide! |
