AMUN enjoys the pride of being the first Latin American Model United Nations. Before there were any Model UN conferences in Brazil, UnB started its participation in UN simulations by sending a delegation to the Harvard National Model UN in Boston and Harvard World MUN in Budapest. In 1998, with the support of the Georgia Institute of Technology, the first edition of the Americas Model United Nations was officially started in Brasília. The first AMUN helped diffusing the belief in UN ideal among IR students and professors. In 1999, the second edition had the crucial relevance of opening a precedence of continuity on a yearly-base, as we continue to do until today. The 7th edition innovated once again by being the first one to publish AMUN’s Book. Its theme – “Building Bridges across Nations” – brought an essence of AMUN: to proportionate the participants to have the unique opportunity to experience the challenges of international negotiations. In 2005, the 8th AMUN intended to show delegates that, by “Uniting People”, it is easier to achieve goals of “Uniting Peoples”. The debates of that edition were around the several aspects of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Such edition also managed to succeed in a very important feature that was pursued in all ensuing AMUN editions: the participation of many foreign delegates. The great challenges of multilateralism – the connections between the concepts of security, development and human rights - were brought to discussion in the 9th Edition. The excellence of its logistics and academic performance became notable. The 10th Edition successfully aimed to debate about regionalism, integration, globalization, environment and border questions in a proposal of “Architecting New Ways of Living Together”. As recognition of the quality of AMUN, 10th AMUN had a waiting list of anxious delegates willing to be part of the event. The 11th edition was the one to inaugurate the marvelous possibility of hosting AMUN at the Brazilian Diplomacy Academy, Instituto Rio Branco. Attracting many foreign delegates, 11th AMUN promoted a plural debate of “Cooperating for Coexisting”. The 12th Edition worked in “fostering cultural diversity, strengthening a global identity” and accomplished to bring the current Brazilian Minister for External Relations - Mr. Celso Amorin - to give a lecture to AMUN delegates. For more than ten years, AMUN has bore the concern of advancing the most challenging issues in academic discussions and its study guides have been welcomed by prestigious universities worldwide. AMUN committee discussions are envisioned to directly contribute to approaching real problems, both informing and calling upon the society’s consciousness towards pressing issues. The 2010 edition has taken for granted successful experiences from the past AMUNs and will bring Brazilian UN simulations to a higher level. We’ll also revive the traditional soccer competition ASCUP, last performed in the 10th edition.
