Esteemed students, professors and MUN enthusiasts,
I feel truthfully honored to invite you to the 2010 edition of the Americas Model United Nations, to be held in Brasilia, Brazil, next July.
There is no sole way of launching a new and successful AMUN edition without looking backwards. Every year, when our delegates arrive in Brasília to our open ceremony, some of them do not realize that this event, which they are joining at that specific moment, is part of a much bigger project; one that was first designed many years ago by idealistic graduate students, just like we are. When reflecting upon AMUN’s history, one comes to the conclusion that it was, and still it is now, the realization of a very brave and audacious achievement. AMUN enjoys the pride of being the first Latin American Model United Nations, and I am ready to honor this reality embedded on our tradition one more time as the Secretary-General of this 13th edition.
By idealizing this 2010 edition theme, firstly it comes to our minds that the year that marks the 13th AMUN highlights the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, representing, hence, an opportunity without precedents to promote reflections on the past ten years of contemporary history, on their meaning to the international relations and the outcomes they will generate for the future. We just thought that this important opportunity could not just pass without mention. Through the recognition that there are new trends and new topics of the decade, we developed ideas in order to make this crucial year to the history of the century we are living in not only the year of 13th AMUN conference, but also the year that shall be conceived as the scenario for its theme.
In this sense, it is by “pondering the 2000s” and “tracing its legacy” that we intend to adopt a reflective nature towards a wide comprehension of most of the important facts that occurred in the last decade within the international arena, especially those which have proven to be sufficiently complex and intricate to deserve multilateral, collective and diplomatic diagnoses and solutions. Therefore, our goal is to rationalize these issues, in order to research what this crucial decade is going to leave as legacy.
Accordingly, tracking the path to a complete adaptation of the new tendencies of the 21st century in all its interfaces, the 13th edition of AMUN is proud for being the first to implement a Sustainable Project, showing a sincere and necessary concern of environmental responsibility, adopting actions such as the carbon neutralization of its commodity chain, the adoption of politics of reducing, reusing and recycling its materials and the complete distribution of environmentally responsible material to the participants of the conference. Also aware of our role in the society we live in, we are proud to keep the purposes and the efficiency of the already recognized social project of AMUN, the AMUN Kids, which is now successfully reaching its sixth year of existence.
Also, following late AMUNs tradition of choosing among monuments of Brasilia’s architecture, one that embodies each edition’s theme, the thematic conception for the 13th AMUN fits perfectly well with Brasilia’s National Library. Because Brasilia’s National Library expresses the essential tensions that mark our thematic conception – those between past and future, information and knowledge, technology and tradition – and because it was built during this decade, it was chosen to represent the spirit of the 2010 edition of AMUN. Alongside with this major element of visual identity, sketches of the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and also the symbolic panels of the renowned artist from Brasilia, Athos Bulcão, will be used to compose the final 13th AMUN visual identity.
If you ever have any questions related to the AMUN 2010 conference, please e-mail us and our voluntary undergraduate staff will be pleased to assist you by all means possible. Also, in entering this website you will have a description of every detail that AMUN staff has been tirelessly working since the successful conclusion of the 12th edition. Nevertheless, I invite you to constantly visit not only this page, but also our social networks twitter (/13thamun), facebook and orkut and to sign our newsletter in order to realize once and for all that AMUN might no longer be a five-day conference also in your life - but an all-year adventure.
Looking forward to meet you all in July, Sincerely,
Secretary-General 13th Americas Model United Nations – AMUN 2010
